Pilates
Pilates is a body conditioning method developed by Joseph Pilates over 80 years ago. The method emphasizes balance, control, focus, and stability through a series of prescriptive movements. This practice incorporates controlled breathing, which provides energy to nourish the muscles, improves the function of the heart and lungs, and facilitates efficient movement acquisition. Joseph Pilates believed that mental and physical health are inter-related, and intended that his system of exercise would strengthen the human mind and body simultaneously.
Pilates exercises are performed on multiple pieces of equipment including the Reformer, Trapeze Table or Cadillac, Chair, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector, and Tower. The Pilates method utilizes spring tension and pulley systems to educate and strengthen the body in proper alignment, movement biomechanics, and to enhance proprioception. Exercises are performed in multiple planes of movement and in a variety of functional positions which further contribute to participant’s understanding of their bodies and acquisition of movement The Pilates education system used at Pinnacle Performance is a rehabilitation-based Pilates approach designed by physical therapist and Orthopedic Certified Specialist, Dr. Brent Anderson of Polestar Education. The curriculum is based on a scientific foundation of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and motor control, and integrates scientific research findings in the areas of orthopedics, sports medicine, and movement science.
